About the CMVOST Grant

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) discretionary (competitive) grant program seeks to reduce the severity and number of crashes on our Nation’s roads involving CMVs by expanding the number of commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders possessing enhanced operator safety training. The priority set by Congress is to assist entities that recruit and train current or former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reservists, and their spouses in obtaining a CDL. The latest CMVOST Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) announcement on Grants.gov includes additional priorities for the funding cycle.

The CMVOST grant is also listed on SAM.gov, an official website of the Federal government that includes detailed public descriptions of Federal programs that provide assistance, such as grants. To view the CMVOST assistance listing, search for Assistance Listing number 20.235.

The CMVOST grant awards may require a cost-sharing/match-requirement of up to 15% of the total cost of the project plan approved. The match requirements are specified in the latest NOFO announcement at Grants.gov.

Monitoring and Managing the CMVOST Grant

Grantees are required to monitor grant activities throughout the grant’s period of performance (POP) to ensure they are meeting their goals and fulfilling the approved project plan objectives.

The CMVOST grant awards have a POP that is the fiscal year of award plus two additional fiscal years. The fiscal year begins upon award date. All coursework, including classroom and range time, and placement services being sought for reimbursement under this award must be completed prior to the POP end date.

Grantees must submit quarterly reports, a performance progress report (PPR), and SF-425/Federal financial report (FFR) throughout the POP. Grantees can learn more about monitoring, reporting, audits, and other important aspects of managing grants in FMCSA's online Grants Management Training.
