FMCSA GRANTS

FMCSA makes grant funding available for projects that support our safety mission. Through research, technology, and enforcement, FMCSA grantees use their knowledge and expertise to improve safety on our Nation’s roadways, in alignment with the U.S. Department of Transportation Strategic Plan.

Supporting FMCSA’s Safety Mission

FMCSA grant programs can fund transformative ideas. Below are some program highlights and examples of projects that would be eligible for Federal funding.

Unprecedented and Historic Funding

The 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is a historic investment that supports transformational investments in our national transportation infrastructure. BIL also secured a substantial increase in funding (more than 50 percent from 2021) for FMCSA's safety grants. Read on for examples of how this funding can be implemented to improve safety.

Implement a Safe System Approach

Do you have an idea that supports safer people, safer vehicles, safer speeds, safer roads, or past-crash care?
Learn more about how DOT is adopting the Safe System Approach and consider applying for funding for a project that supports these goals.

Make Roadways and Work Zones Safer

Develop information technology systems that collect work zone time and location data and send it to commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to prepare them to take extra precautions when navigating these areas. Learn more about applying for a HP-ITD Grant.

Study Ways to Improve Safety

Researchers at colleges and universities, safety advocates, and more can apply for funding to cover a study into ways to prevent fatal crashes involving CMVs. Learn more about the HP-CMV Grant.

Provide Financial Assistance for Commercial Driver Training Programs

Educational institutions can apply for funding that they can in turn make available to students to help make commercial driver training more affordable. Learn more about the CMVOST Grant.

Improving National CDL Compliance

State Driver’s Licensing Agencies (SDLA) and other types of entities can apply for grants to increase or maintain their jurisdiction’s compliance with CDL regulations in 49 CFR parts 383 and 384, thereby improving the effectiveness of FMCSA’s National CDL Program. Enhance Your State's Safety Programs

State government agencies can apply for grants to support and expand their efforts to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving CMVs. Learn about discretionary grants like HP-CMV, HP-ITD, CDLPI, CMVOST Grant Programs and the MCSAP formula grant. You can also contact your FMCSA Division Office for more information.
