Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs)

The Safety Measurement System (SMS) categorizes motor carrier on-road safety performance into seven BASICs. SMS is used to identify unsafe carriers, prioritize them for interventions, and monitor changes in compliance.
