FMCSA Crash Data Collection Resource Home Page
Mutual Exclusivity:
The vehicle below is a good example of the difficulty that can arise when describing a vehicle within a merged attribute set. This vehicle is clearly a "van" by its body type, but because it has 12 seats it would have to translate into SAFETYNET Vehicle Configuration as a "Bus (Seats for 9-15, including driver)". This same vehicle is also being used as a "school bus". If all or more than one of these choices were available in the same data element on the crash report it is clearly impossible to get consistent data. As a result, it is recommended that "Use" codes (e.g. - school bus, emergency vehicle, construction vehicle), Body Type and Vehicle Configuration attributes be kept as a separate elements on the crash report.
