3.6 Support the
development of Safety Plans or Commercial Vehicle Safety Plans
FMCSA and MCSPA funded
programs are required to develop safety plans on an annual basis. A&I Online can
support the safety plan development process in the following ways:
1. Identify commercial motor vehicle safety/crash problems within each state
State crash
reports are designed to provide summarized information on a state's crashes to better
identify where the problem areas are within a state. There are over 40 state crash reports
that can help to identify problem areas for a state. All data are summarized and
compared with the national crash totals to identify areas where a specific state
might have a safety problem area that can be targeted for improvement.
Example:
1. Select Crash
Profiles Online from the Main Menu.

2. Click on State
Profiles from within the Crash Profiles module.

3. From State Crash Reports,
select a state and year from the pull-down menus. Review the
reports in each of the focus areas and highlight areas with high numbers of
crashes. For example, select the report titled First Harmful Event from the Crash Focus Area.

4. Notice that the Collision
involving Pedestrian category is an area that is highlighted because
the percent difference between California's value and USA's value is greater than or equal to 25 percent. Review the report's previous years'
data by selecting a different date from the date pull-down menu.

5. This category can be
identified as one that they would like to improve upon in the future.
2. Monitor/assess
the strategy for improving safety performance in the identified safety/crash problem areas
Historical data is
presented in the crash profiles that will allow an identified problem area to be monitored
over time.
Example: In the Large
Trucks Involved in Crashes by First Harmful Event report the Collision
involving Pedestrian category could be used to monitor the number of crashes recorded
with a "Collision involving Pedestrian" as the first harmful event over the next
three years to measure improvement.
