Safety Programs and Program Effectiveness

Safety Programs

On January 1, 2000, the U.S. Congress established the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), whose primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.

To support this safety mission FMCSA developed three safety programs that include Reviews, Roadside Inspections, and Traffic Enforcement. FMCSA and States are working together to implement each program and improve motor carrier safety.

Program Effectiveness

FMCSA's Program Effectiveness research measures the effectiveness of FMCSA’s safety programs through three Models. The Compliance Review Effectiveness Model and the Intervention Model show the impact of these programs in reducing crashes, avoiding injuries, and saving lives. The Resource Allocation Model takes the results of these two Models and analyzes the allocation of State resources.
